Weddings at He Piko No Waiohuli
He Piko No Waiohuli is very different from a resort or traditional event venue. Located within the Waiohuli Hawaiian Homestead community in Kula, the property sits high on the slopes of Haleakalā with broad views across Maui and toward Kahoʻolawe, Molokini, and Lānaʻi. The Waiohuli Hawaiian Homesteaders Association describes the center as a gathering place for weddings, lūʻau, cultural events, meetings, and other community functions.
I have photographed weddings here over a number of years, and one of the things I have appreciated is watching the property continue to grow. What I first knew as a much smaller kitchen building has expanded into a far more functional event space, with a large covered patio, improved gathering areas, parking, restroom facilities, and open lawn that gives couples a lot of freedom in how they arrange the day.
That flexibility is what makes Waiohuli especially interesting to photograph. Rather than being locked into one ceremony layout or one reception plan, couples can shape the property around the kind of celebration they want while still having the Upcountry landscape as the backdrop.
The Views
Waiohuli sits roughly 2,000 to 3,000 feet above sea level on the slopes of Haleakalā, and the association highlights views toward Kahoʻolawe, Molokini, Lānaʻi, and Central Maui from the property.
From a photography standpoint, the elevation is one of the venue’s biggest strengths. The view feels completely different from a coastal wedding, and the sunsets here can be some of the most beautiful I photograph on Maui. The changing Upcountry light, clouds, and distance across the island give us opportunities for wide portraits that really show where the wedding is taking place.
A Flexible Ceremony Space
One of the things I like most about Waiohuli is that the property does not force every couple into the same ceremony setup. The rental materials include multiple lawn areas around the kitchen and covered patio, giving couples room to decide where the ceremony should face and how guests will move through the property.
That flexibility matters photographically because ceremony direction has a big effect on both the view and the light. Depending on the season, weather, and time of day, the ceremony can be arranged to take advantage of the landscape while still keeping guest comfort and photography in mind.
The Covered Patio & Reception
Over the years, I have watched Waiohuli develop from a relatively small kitchen facility into a much more capable event space. The current rental materials include use of the kitchen, covered patio, lawn areas, tables and chairs, restrooms, marked parking, and other basic event amenities depending on the rental package.
The covered patio makes the property much more flexible for receptions because couples have shelter while still feeling connected to the surrounding landscape. There is room to customize table placement, dining, dancing, and the overall flow of the evening rather than working around a fixed ballroom layout.
