Emma and Matt wanted their Maui wedding to feel simple, organized, and centered on the people closest to them. Rather than planning a large hometown wedding with hundreds of guests, they invited approximately 50 friends and family members to celebrate at Sugar Beach Events.

Maui was already meaningful to them. Together, Emma and Matt had visited Hawaiʻi more than 20 times, and Emma had been returning to the islands since childhood. She wanted the natural beauty of the ocean, palms, and evening light to shape the setting without covering it in unnecessary decoration. Their wedding at Sugar Beach Events brought that vision together through emotional first looks, portraits around the property, an oceanfront ceremony, and plenty of time with the people who had traveled to celebrate with them.

From Bumble to Maui

Emma and Matt met on Bumble and immediately connected. Their first date took place at Breakside Brewery in downtown Portland, where they discovered that their parents had attended school together and had remained loosely connected over the years.

As Emma and Matt’s relationship grew, their families became close too. Within the first few months of dating, their parents had developed a friendship of their own.

Matt proposed after one of Emma’s half marathons. As she approached the finish, she found their friends and family waiting with signs asking, “Will you marry me?” Matt had been tracking her progress on his phone so he would know exactly when to get down on one knee.

Emma was completely surprised. Before Matt could finish asking the question, she put on the ring and jokingly declared, “That’s mine.”

Why They Chose a Maui Destination Wedding

Emma had attended plenty of weddings over the years, but none of her close friends had chosen a destination wedding. She and Matt liked the idea of creating something different while keeping the guest list intimate enough to spend meaningful time with everyone who attended.

Maui felt like the natural choice. For Emma, Maui offered the right balance: beautiful coastlines and a sense of escape, with enough nearby activity that guests could enjoy more than the wedding itself.

Once Emma began researching venues, she found Sugar Beach Events and Gather on Maui. She discovered my work through the venues’ Instagram accounts and chose me because she connected with the photographs and editing style.

Two Meaningful First Looks

Emma chose not to dedicate photography time to traditional getting-ready coverage. Instead, we began once she was dressed and ready for two of the moments she cared about most. The first was with her father inside the bridal suite. We positioned him near the best available light before Emma entered and tapped him on the shoulder. Giving them that moment privately allowed me to photograph his immediate reaction without distractions.

Emma then met Matt outside near the trees for their own first look. Matt stood facing away as she approached and placed her hand on his shoulder. Both of them had expected the wedding to be emotional, and the first look gave them time to take everything in together before the ceremony began. These moments were a priority from our earliest planning conversations, so the photography timeline was intentionally built around giving them enough time without making either interaction feel rushed.

Wedding Portraits Around Sugar Beach Events

After the first look, we stayed around the property for portraits of Emma and Matt. Sugar Beach Events offers several different environments within a small area, including the greenery around the venue, open lawn, and direct beach access.

We used the beach without asking Emma and Matt to enter the water, keeping the portraits comfortable and consistent with the classic, relaxed experience they wanted. Photographing the couple before the ceremony also allowed us to complete immediate-family and wedding-party photographs early.

Their wedding party was intentionally small: Emma’s sister and cousin stood with her, while Matt’s brother and cousin stood with him. Two young members of Matt’s family joined them as flower girls.

Completing these photographs before guests gathered gave Emma and Matt more freedom after the ceremony to spend time greeting the people who had traveled to Maui for them.

An Oceanfront Ceremony at Sugar Beach Events

Emma and Matt held their ceremony outside at Sugar Beach Events with the Maui coastline surrounding them. Their close friend Emily officiated. As a marriage and family counselor who knew them personally, she spent time learning more about their relationship and incorporated those details into the ceremony. That familiarity made the experience feel connected to Emma and Matt rather than like a ceremony that could have belonged to anyone. With their closest family members and friends gathered together, the intimate guest count accomplished exactly what Emma had hoped it would.

The wedding felt organized and personal while still giving everyone time to be present with one another. After the ceremony, we photographed their extended families and friends together. These groupings mattered because the wedding was never only about bringing Emma and Matt to Maui. It was also about creating an experience they could share with the people who had supported their relationship.

A Wedding Built Around Their Priorities

Emma and Matt planned their photography around the moments that mattered most to them: their first looks, the ceremony, photographs with their families, and time celebrating with everyone who had traveled to Maui for them.

The reception continued with heartfelt speeches, cake, parent dances, and Emma and Matt’s first dance before their guests filled the dance floor. With an intimate group of family and friends, they were able to spend the evening celebrating alongside the people closest to them instead of feeling pulled from one wedding-day formality to another.

From the quiet emotion of their first looks to the energy of the reception, Emma and Matt created a Maui destination wedding that felt like them, simple, classic, family-centered, and surrounded by the natural beauty that had brought them back to the island so many times. Thank you both for trusting me to document it.
