A Romantic Hotel Wailea Proposal at the Treehouse

John contacted me while planning his and Soomin’s first trip to Maui. He had been preparing the proposal for a while and wanted the evening to feel thoughtful, intimate, and true to the two of them. After seeing my previous work at Hotel Wailea, he reached out for help bringing everything together at the Treehouse.

From the beginning, John had a clear vision for the photographs. He wanted two distinct parts to the evening: warm, natural portraits around golden hour and a darker, moodier atmosphere once the sun went down. He also wanted the later photographs to retain the ambient glow of the setting without feeling overly bright or flash-heavy.

That vision shaped the timing, locations, and photography plan for their Hotel Wailea proposal.

Planning the Proposal at Hotel Wailea

The Treehouse at The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea is surrounded by tropical greenery, which creates a private and romantic atmosphere. Because the trees also block the light earlier than an open beach or lawn, careful timing was important. We planned the proposal early enough to preserve the softer evening light for their portraits afterward.

Hotel Wailea’s team helped coordinate access to the property, and I arrived before John and Soomin to walk through the approved areas and prepare for the moment. The proposal setup featured flowers, rose petals, photographs, and illuminated “Marry Me” letters arranged along the Treehouse staircase.

Everything was ready before they arrived, allowing John to focus on Soomin instead of worrying about the photography or final details.

The Moment She Said Yes

At the Treehouse staircase, surrounded by tropical foliage and the details John had planned, he got down on one knee and asked Soomin to marry him. I photographed the moment from a distance so they could stay present with each other while still preserving the full setting and their reactions.

After Soomin said yes, they had time to take everything in, look at the ring, and celebrate together before we moved into their engagement portraits. Those first few minutes after a proposal are always some of my favorites to photograph. The biggest surprise is over, the nerves begin to settle, and the couple can finally enjoy what just happened.

Golden-Hour Engagement Photos Around Hotel Wailea

Once they were officially engaged, Hotel Wailea provided champagne for John and Soomin to celebrate together at the Treehouse. It gave them a chance to take in the moment, share a toast, and enjoy those first few minutes as an engaged couple before we began exploring the property. We started their portraits near the avocado trees, where I gave them simple direction that allowed them to walk, laugh, and interact naturally while the evening light was still soft.

From there, we explored more of the Hotel Wailea grounds, including the Japanese-inspired bridge and the gorgeous hedge staircases leading up to The Birdhouse. John and Soomin brought so much energy to this part of the evening. Their portraits feel joyful and personal because they were not simply posing for photographs, they were celebrating their engagement together.

A Candlelit Finish at the Treehouse

As daylight faded, we returned to the Treehouse for the second part of John’s vision. Although the weather did not give us the exact warm, sunlit finish we had hoped for, the softer evening light and surrounding darkness created a completely different atmosphere from the earlier portraits.

Rather than overpowering the setting with too much flash, I worked with the available light and used just enough additional lighting to preserve the intimate ambiance of the Treehouse. We finished with photographs of John and Soomin enjoying a quiet moment together at the table. The final images still feel warm, cinematic, and connected to the private experience John had imagined from the beginning.

"Amazing experience working with Aaron for my proposal photoshoot!

We are amazed by our photos and happy with every single one. His guidance really brought out so much creativity and energy in our photos, and you can genuinely feel that in every shot — they don't feel posed or forced at all, just real moments captured beautifully.

What really set Aaron apart, though, was how hands-on he was with the planning..."

Planning Your Own Hotel Wailea Proposal

If you are considering proposing at the Treehouse, contact Hotel Wailea early to discuss your reservation and photography plans. The property may require advance approval, proof of insurance from your photographer, and approval for lighting or other equipment. Establishing those details ahead of time allows the proposal itself to remain private, relaxed, and focused on the two of you.

John’s combination of thoughtful planning and trust in the process gave us time to capture the proposal, natural portraits around the property, and the moodier evening photographs he originally envisioned, all within one connected experience.

Congratulations again, John and Soomin. It was an honor to photograph such a meaningful evening and help preserve the beginning of this next chapter together.
